How to Find Affordable Therapy in Ontario

Prioritizing your mental health is essential, but the cost can often be a barrier. In Ontario, there are several affordable therapy options available. We've curated a list of resources to help you access the support you need while keeping costs manageable.

1. Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)

Many employers offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) as part of their benefits package. EAPs provide confidential counselling services for employees and their immediate family members at no cost. These services can include short-term counselling for a variety of issues, such as stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. Check with your HR department to see if your employer offers an EAP and how to access these services.

2. Master’s Intern Therapists/Affordable Therapy Programs

Another affordable option is to seek therapy from master’s intern therapists. These are graduate students in psychology or counselling programs who are completing their clinical hours under the supervision of a licensed professional. They offer services at a reduced rate, making therapy more accessible. Many private practices and group practices will have intern therapists.

3. Online Therapy Programs

AbilitiCBT is an excellent example of a virtual mental health service available to Ontario residents. AbilitiCBT offers internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that is accessible from the comfort of your home.

BounceBack Ontario Managed by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), this program provides free access to self-guided mental health resources and support, including online videos and telephone coaching for individuals experiencing mild to moderate anxiety or depression.

4. Apps

Free mental health apps provide accessible and convenient support, allowing individuals to manage their mental well-being anytime and anywhere. These apps offer a range of tools, from self-assessment and mood tracking to guided meditations and cognitive behavioral therapy exercises, empowering users to take an active role in their mental health. Additionally, they can serve as a valuable supplement to traditional therapy, providing ongoing support between sessions.

Mindshift CBT Developed by Anxiety Canada, this free mobile app provides evidence-based tools and resources to help individuals manage anxiety using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques. The app offers self-help strategies, relaxation exercises, and goal-setting tools.

MindBeacon MindBeacon provides free digital mental health support through the Stronger Minds program, which offers resources to help individuals manage stress and anxiety. It includes articles, videos, and guided tools created by mental health experts. Users can access self-help content on topics like coping strategies, resilience-building, and maintaining mental health during challenging times.

5. Sliding Scale Fees

Many experienced therapists offer sliding scale fees. This means the therapist’s standard rate is reduced to a lower fee. This fee is sometimes a set rate or it can be flexible based on your income (dependent on the therapist’s practice). Don’t hesitate to ask therapists if they offer a sliding scale when you contact them. It is important keep in mind though, that not every therapist offers sliding scale and those who do often hold a limited number of spaces.

6. Referrals Through Your Doctor (GP)

Your General Practitioner (GP) can be a valuable resource in finding affordable therapy. In some cases, they may be able to refer you to a psychiatrist or a mental health specialist whose services are covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). Additionally, GPs can provide referrals to community mental health programs that offer free or low-cost services.

7. Group Therapy

Group therapy is another cost-effective way to receive mental health support. Group therapy sessions are typically less expensive than individual sessions and can provide the added benefit of peer support.
